How to change your monitor's resolution to 1024x768:

1024x768 is currently the most commonly used resolution.

Higher resolutions allow your monitor to display more content in the same space.

*IMPORTANT NOTE*: You should always check your hardware's specification manual(s) to be sure of what settings are appropriate and available for use on your system. NEVER EXCEED the settings that your hardware is designed to run at.

STEP BY STEP: (for persons using most Microsoft operating systems. For persons using Macintosh ® systems, please consult your user manual(s))

1.
Right click on your desktop. (Where the icons are when no program is opened) A popup box will appear.

2.
Go to "Properties" (an entry at the bottom or towards the bottom) A box will open with tabs at the top. Choose the tab labeled "settings"

3.
Under the "settings" tab there will be a section called "screen resolution" with a slider. Your's is most likely set at 800x600 or lower. Slide the slider to the right until it shows "1024x768". If your resolution is already higher than 1024 x 768 it is best to just leave the resolution as it is.

4.

Hit the button labeled "Apply" and then "OK".

You will get a breif interlude of a sample of the new settings and a box that asks you if you really want to change your settings. If everything looks alright then tell it "yes" you do want to keep these settings.

If anything appears distorted or if you get snow or wavy lines - then DO NOT keep the settings. You can tell it "NO" or do nothing and it will automatically reject the new settings.

IMPORTANT: Some monitors, especially older ones, are not capable of handling higher resolution settings. 1024x768 is commonly accepted. It is very rare that a monitor cannot handle the 1024x768 resolution, but some cannot and display/hardware problems can occur if an inappropriate setting is forced on the system.

There are resolutions that are even higher than 1024x768. Your video card might be able to handle super high resolutions but your monitor may not be. Your monitor might be able to handle certain resolutions but your video card may not. BOTH your video card and monitor must be able to handle a specific resolution in order to display the resolution. 1024x768 is a common standard and virtually every monitor made in the last 10 years is capable handling this display setting. You should always check your hardware's specification manual(s) to be sure of what settings are appropriate and available for use on your system. NEVER EXCEED the settings that your hardware is designed to run at.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: Higher resolutions result in allowing a greater amount of material to be displayed in the same amount of space. This of course means that what you are seeing appears smaller. Most people find 1024x768 to display at a comfortable viewing level however some people find this resolution to be "too small" for their liking. Text will appear smaller at each increment of monitor resolution increase.

There are ways of making the text appear larger even at this and higher resolutions. Located where the settings are of the display properties are other settings to enlarge type faces. Advanced users can easily change icon or font settings to specific sizes, type faces or bolded as is personally preferred. Microsoft.com has instructions on settings changes for easier or larger viewing. Many other web sites have information on changing settings for ease of use or for the visually impaired. There are even special "large type face" settings for persons with extreme visual impairments in most operating systems. Even normal sighted persons sometimes use these settings to increase viewing comfort. Please visit Microsoft.com or do a search on sites with more information and instructions on settings changes for your specific equipment and operating system if you need help making additional changes for your viewing comfort.
